Ogre Fest 2012 Tap List with Descriptions

Anderson Valley Barley Wine (9 abv / 30 ibu) - Copper color with a white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, fruit, and some hops. Flavor is sweet, malty, and fruity, with caramel, earth, and some hops on the finish. Medium-full, smooth palate.

top

Avery Czar Imperial Stout (11 / 60) – Taste is chocolate malt/chocolate milk shake up front with some more earthy/herbal hop notes in the middle that fades into a big bitter finish with sherry notes...some wood. The finish is sweet caramel with hints of chocolate that lasts for a long time

top

Avery Hog Heaven Barley Wine (9.3 / 70) – the hops just hit you like a truck! And the hops manage to be both piney, very sweet and powerful at the same time! The caramel taste is also very strong here as well, which may be why the hops taste sweet. Much like the smell, the citrus The malts here, while not strong, provide enough backbone to add flavor.

top

BBC Barley Wine (11 / 40) – Flavor is also middle of the road with dusty dark maltiness, herbal-floral hoppiness in the finish, and alcohol pushing through with progress through the glass.

top

Bear Republic Racer X Imperial IPA (9 / 100) – heavy notes of grapefruit, tangerine, orange, followed with light pine notes and with a slight alcohol kick on the finish.  not too much carbonation, a nice citrus hop taste lingers.

top

Bell’s Expedition Imperial Stout (10.5 / 45) – lots of flavor. Like a bomb going off in your mouth. Get a nice sting from the alcohol with a sweet front and a dark chocolaty finish. Vanill and little coffee are very present. This stout is incredibly hoppy as well.

top

Bell’s Hop Slam Imperial IPA (10 / 75) – Nose is incredibly fresh with citrus, pine, grassy and light floral notes.  Taste is dry with grapefruit and pineapple, right upfront, some pine and floral notes and nice honey feel and sweetness on the back. Well balanced, booze is masked with flavor

top

Bell’s Third Coast Old Ale (10.2 / 30) – a cellerable American-style barleywine that has notes of dried fruit and caramel embedded in a rich malt background that will grow more complex over time.

top

Boulder Killer Penguin Barley Wine (10 / 40) – Caramel, brown sugar, tropical fruits alongside some dark fruits, just a hint of alcohol in the taste, quite sweet yet slightly a bitter dryness at the end. Creamy medium body with light to prickly carbonation, it leaves the lips feeling sticky, some alcohol warmth as it goes down. Kind of dry at the end.

top

Boulder Mojo Risin’ Double IPA (10.5 / 80) – A slightly fruity but floral aroma emanates from the head, leaving only the floral once the head leaves. Appearance is Golden amber. Taste is incredibly fruity, almost tropical like a pineapple. Malt slowly seeps through at the end of a long lingering finish. Palate is medium bodied, slick and resinous texture with a soft carbonation

top

Brooklyn Monster Barley Wine (10.8 / 50) – Close to the nose, with nice variables. Sticky toffee and dried fruits on the front and middle of the palette, finishes with a flash of a toasted or lightly burn caramel grain. Not cloying, which is always a plus with these English-style barleywines...no sure if its yeast or hops but there is a fruity, citric component with a light bitterness. A splash of alcohol rounds out the flavors.

top

Dogfish Head Hellhound on My Ale Imperial IPA (10 / 70) – To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnson’s mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) we add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

top

Dogfish Head Immort Ale Strong Ale (11 / 55) – Brewed with peat-smoked barley, Immort is brewed with organic juniper berries, vanilla & maple syrup. It's aged on oak and fermented with a blend of English & Belgian yeasts.

top

Epic Big Bad Baptist Imperial Coffee Stout (11.1 / 30) – It smells like huge fresh black coffee, with oak and toasted coconut and a little dark chocolate and molasses. Tastes like lots of fresh black coffee, with some bitter dark chocolate and oak, and a little toasted coconut and smoke. It had a clean and surprisingly mellow bitter aftertaste.

top

Flying Dog Kujo Imperial Coffee Stout (8.9 / 30) – Chocolate, caramel, and green citrus are pronounced up front in the taste, with those hops in particular really taking control of the profile. Assertive coffee character does mix in and really comes out across the back with a flush of flavor. This finishes dry and burnt with a touch of lingering bitter fruit

top

Founder’s Blushing Monk Belgian Imperial Raspberry (9.2 / 20) - Essentially an "Imperial Rübæus," this ale contains four times the amount of raspberries as Rübæus and is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain.

top

Founder’s Breakfast Stout Imperial Coffee Stout (8.3 / 50) - At first a bit of roasted bitter coffee and dark chocolate are detected. A nice oatmeal backbone then starts to mix with a little bit of sweet vanilla. This seems to sweeten the dark chocolate/cocoa flavor bringing it more to the realm of a sweet chocolate flavor.

top

Founder’s Nemesis Barley Wine (12 / 85) - The aroma shows a good amount of caramel and toffee flavors to it. I get some oak to it along with a little bit of a citrus hop presence. A little bit of the darker malts show through with some roasty, chocolaty notes. The taste has more of the caramel malts and toffee flavors to it up front. In the finish I get more of the roasty, bitter malts coming out with a little chocolate to them. The roasty, bitterness gives it a nice balance.

top

Great Divide Belgian Style Yeti Imperial Stout (9.5 / 30) – Pours black, with hints of brown on the edges. A large mocha head forms and leaves behind some great oily lacing. Smell is roasted coffee, apple skin fruitiness, bitter chocolate and a hint of booze. Taste is still stout like, yet lighter. Bitter chocolate and roasted malts with a light coffee aftertaste. The Belgian flavors mellow it out. Feels very smooth for a full bodied almost chewy beer. This coats and glides simultaneously and makes for a great drink.

top

Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout (9.5 / 30) – The aroma has chocolate, cocoa nibs, oak, and cayenne pepper. Very tasty. The flavor has chocolate, cocoa nibs, oak, cayenne pepper, and alcohol. Sweet, balanced with some bitterness from the dark roasted malt, along with some heat from the cayenne.

top

Great Divide Espresso Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout (9.5 / 30) – Hops reveal themselves in the tasting, but more subtle than other Yeti's. Coffee is quite strong and the oak makes more of a showing than in the nose. Vanilla builds as the beer warms and allows brown sugar hints to surface.

top

Great Divide Old Ruffian Barley Wine (10.2 / 65)- The nose has a heavy citrusy hop aroma as well as a faint caramelly, malty aroma with hints of pineapple and birthday cake. The flavor is malty, bready, and caramelly up front with some faint dark fruit notes followed by an intense hop character. The hops offer citrus, grapefruit, and pineapple as well as some piny, earthy notes. The hops leave the bitterness of an IPA behind on the palate well after the swallow. The alcohol is present but it mostly adds warmth and a slight bite to the finish.

top

Great Lakes Blackout Stout Imperial Stout (9 / 55) –  Nose is roasted coffee, bittersweet coffee, roasted malt, and a graham cracker like light toasty spicy biscuit quality. Taking a sip, a touch of herbal hop bitterness, then roasted coffee and malt, not too dark, but roasty and toasty. Some sweeter dark caramel and bittersweet chocolate. Finish is medium with some chocolate and roasted malt. Medium body with some soft carbonation, slick and oily on the tongue.

top

Green Flash Barley Wine (10.9 / 40) – Piny aromas, but a well pronounced caramel colored body. The taste is surprisingly vanilla, with orange, bourbon, and cracker and maybe a bit mesquite. Feels mildly carbonated, kind of dry, and slightly warm in the end.

top

JW Lee’s Harvest Ale ‘010 Barley Wine (11.5 / 45) – So much complexity in a great port-like way. Huge finish with some light, warming alcohol. Some roasted malt flavors and oaky almost vanilla tastes. Finish is very long. Tons of residual sugars. Molasses and a touch of acidity.

top

Kuhnhenn DRIPA Double Rice IPA (9.5 / 80) – This gold colored West Coast style Double India Pale Ale has an intense hop nose, with aromas mainly of citrus. The high hop character dominates this IPA’s flavor profile. Made with American long grain rice, it is quite difficult to make but the rice contributes to this beer’s crisp aftertaste.

top

Kuhnhenn White Devil Imperial Belgian Wit (8.5 / 35) – Our Imperial White Ale is a cloudy straw color, and has a zesty citrus nose and a medium sweet aroma. It is refreshingly crisp with a bit of a wheat flavor. With medium hop bitterness, this is a delightful brew for any season.

top

Lagunitas Gnarley Wine Barley Wine (11 / 50) – Rich toffee malt with plums, raisins and wassail immediately fill the nose. Fresh orange juice seems to persist throughout. Big malty flavors are as expected, with toffee and pumpernickel up front. Raisins, dried fig, butter, butterscotch seem to come and go. A mild finish carries a slight tinge of bitterness,

top

Left Hand Ambidextrous Imperial Stout (9 / 30) – This is indeed an Imperial version of Milk Stout, and the regular version is one of my favorite beers. The beer is smooth as all hell, you taste none of the 10.5% abv. Also, coffee undertones carry through the beer wonderfully

top

Left Hand Widdershins Barley Wine (10 / 30) – Pours a hazy rubied medium amber with a thick, sudsy tan head. The head looks like it might have grain husk and hop leafs knocking around in it--really chewy-looking stuff. Nice earthy and piney nose; you get big blasts of malt and hops at the same time. Body’s on the high side of medium, with soft carb. Clean, easy-drinking mid-palate with grain nusk, nuts, toast, and then some light resin and pineyness.

top

New Holland Night Tripper Imperial Stout (10.9 /50) – Chewy full body with a smooth creamy texture which counters the roasted malt notes perfectly. Lots of drk chocolate flavor along with roasted gourmet coffee, hazelnut, toffee, oatmeal and burnt toast. Although there is plenty of roasted malt, the silky sweetness prevents this beerfeom become harsh and acrid. Slight dry finish. Really well balanced

top

North Coast Old Rasputin (Nitro) Imperial Stout (9 / 35) – , Old Rasputin has perfectly balanced flavors of bitter dark chocolate and coffee, as well as a surprisingly high alcohol content of 9%. Pours deep black with a creamy brown head, the low carbonation allows for full enjoyment of this delectable stout. Gentle mouthfeel and strong flavors that leave little to be desired.

top

North Coast Old Stock Old Ale (11.9 / 25) – A rich looking clear brown with no head and negligible lacing. The beer doesn't smell of more than sweet maltiness (quite faint), and drinks just as smooth and sweet as it smells. I get bold raisin and tobacco flavors,

top

Ommegang Gnomegang Belgian Pale (9.5 / 25) – This Belgian-Style Blonde Ale pours a hazy, pale gold with a tight white head and very little lacing. Tropical fruit is heavy in the nose, with hints of hay, earthiness, and yeasty funk rounding out this big bouquet. Peach and mango flavors liven up the pallet with some hop spice balancing this smooth and fruity brew. Tongue-prickling carbonation meets a medium body in this beer that finishes remarkably dry.

top

Sierra Nevada ’09 Bigfoot Barley Wine (9.6 /60) – Smell is plum, caramelized apple, toast, piney, floral and citrusy hops, toffee, ethanol, grassy earthiness, molasses, perfume, cherry, and melon. Huge aromas here. Taste follows the nose with rich layers of caramel, raisin, molasses, toast, candy apple, toffee, melon, and a big blast of juicy, citric, and boldly bitter hops

top

Southern Tier Back Burner Barley Wine (9.6 / 50) – Begins very off-dry, with heavy caramel and husky toasted malt. Acidity is understated, while fruity esters are fairly pronounced. Malt becomes softer, more bready, in the middle as umami becomes momentarily defining. Earthy flavors compliment relatively mild bitterness in the finish, with dark citrus fruit and resurgent caramel

top

Stone Double Bastard Imperial Strong Ale (11.2 / 85) – The taste starts out quite sweet with some light citrus coming in next, much like an Imperial IPA. There is then a transition to the darker fruits more typical in a Barleywine. There is some vanilla along with wood towards the finish. A fairly strong bitterness comes in at the end along with some pineapple. Finally there is a somewhat drying bitterness with hints of tobacco.

top

Stone 2007 Russian Imperial Stout (10.5 / 50) –  Same notes as the 2011 but much more mellowed out

top

Stone 2011 Russian Imperial Stout (10.5 / 50) – Strong roasty flavors at the start of the sip, the coffee flavors are very prevalent and results in a very nice dry bitterness. As the sip finishes, the taste is on the spicy side, both from the hops and from the alcohol content. Speaking of the 10.5% abv, while it is noticeable, it is not too much, as the really is not any heat from it. There is also a very good aftertaste that lingers in the back of the mouth for quite some time.

top

Stone Vertical Epic 09-09-09 Belgian Dark Strong Ale (8.6 / 25) – Pours a deep browned out, almost black color. Tanned head rests on top, leaving some patchy lacing and retaining with some film layers. Nice roasty malt character in the nose with some nuttiness and dark chocolate. Bready with caramel and slight boozy warmth. Very faint belgian yeast presence. Decent roasted character up front with nuts and dark chocolate. Light belgian yeast with a hint of spice. Thicker malt backbone with bread crust, caramel, and mocha. Finishes a little warm and sweet.

top

Stone Vertical Epic 10-10-10 Belgian Strong Pale Ale (9.5 / 35) - Fermented with the legendary Ardennes strain of Belgian yeast, 10.10.10 is a Belgian Strong Pale Ale brewed with pale malt and triticale (a cross of wheat and rye), hopped with German Perle hops, and steeped with chamomile during the whirlpool stage. In secondary fermentation, we added a juice blend of Muscat, Gewurztraminer, and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties.

top

Stone Vertical Epic 11-11-11 Belgian Strong Ale with Cinnamon and Chili Peppers  (9.4 / 30) – Raisin reddish brown in color. Poured with a short beige foam that dissipated quickly, but left lots of sticky lacings on the glass. Spicy, sweet aromas with a caramel malt undertone. Thick, rich feel with dense, lazy carbonation. Unique spicy pepper flavor up front with sweet caramel malt beneath. Dark fruit and cinnamon flavors thru the middle to the end. Finishes semi-dry with a funky sweet and spicy aftertaste

top

The Brew Kettle ’09 Jack Hammer Barley Wine (11.5 / 65) – The aroma is classic English Barleywine. Warm toasted bread melds with caramel and raisin up front. Bits of burnt sugar and booze are set just behind. Very smooth and balanced aroma. The hop presence is very muted in the nose. The flavor begins very sweet up front loaded with plenty of caramel and brown sugar. A pleasant hop bitterness develops just behind to provide some balance. Bit of molasses and raisin flavors provide a bit of depth on the mid palate. The flavors meld as they move towards the back of the tongue, leaving only a light sweetness behind.

top

The Brew Ketlle ‘010 Jack Hammer Barley Wine (11.5 / 65) – Same as ‘09

The Brew Kettle ‘011 BBL Aged Jack Hammer Barley Wine (12 / 65) – Same as ’09 with Boubon and vanilla notes

The Brew Kettle ‘010 BBL Aged Collaborative Evil Imperial Baltic Porter (8.7 / 30) – Looks nice in terms of color, a dark black that does not allow any light to escape. No head whatsover, nor any lace. That knocks down the appearance score, but the beer is still very appealing. Smells nice - a great roasted malt comes through and gives impressions of chocolate, dark toffee, a touch of tar and dark fruit, and slight coffee notes. The nose is just a touch subdued and the coconut powder "secret ingredient" doesn't come out enough but is barely noticeable when this beer warms up. Some earthy hoppiness rounds things out.

top

The Brew Kettle ‘011 Tunguska Imperial Stout (10.8 / 65) – Nice roasty malts along with chocolate and coffee are main flavor. Has a nice, creamy, caramel flavor also. Alcohol does show up at the end but really, this is incredibly smooth and flavorful. Minor dark fruits along with cocoa round the great taste out. Big, thick beer, lots of flavors. Tongue gets the malts, coffee, chocolate, and palette receives the reminding flavors along with some fruits and alcohol warmth. Aftertaste is fairly smooth and sweet. Really nice and tastly, and dangerous at such alcohol % with such drinkabilty.

The Brew Kettle ‘011 Tunguska BBL Aged Imperial Stout (11.5 / 65) – Same as ‘010 but aged in Bourbon Barrels

top

The Brew Kettle Dark Helmet Imperial Schwarzbier (8.3 / 40) – A true TBK original, we kick this German-style black lager up a couple notches. Big clean malty flavor with just a hint of roasted malt. "May the Schwartz be with you!"

top

The Brew Kettle Alt Monster Imperial Altbier (8.2 / 45) –  Big Oaky and Earthy German Style Alt with huge caramel notes that finishes slightly sweet but very clean.

The Brew Kettle Old 21 Imperial IPA (9 /90) - Smell is sweet and tangy like mango and grapefruit but then a mixture of bitter resinous hops and caramel malt shine through. The flavor is a complex concoction of sweet and bitter hops up front followed by a major takeover of bitter oily hops and sweet caramel malt - delicious. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and smooth drinking

top

Thirsty Dog Cerebus BBL Aged Belgian Tripel (10 / 20) – This beer is made with one grain and 4 Belgian yeasts, a deceptive golden color, and a malty palate lend complexity to this Belgian Trippel Ale. Then aged in Bourbon Barrels for a nice level of complexity

top

Thirsty Dog Ortus BBL Aged Belgian Dubbel (8.5 / 30) – Roasty caramel & nuttiness carries through into the flavor & are very prominent. Some dark fruits in the finish with that nice medium roast that's not too bitter. A little coffee, just a touch of booze.

top

Thirsty Dog Siberian Night BBL Aged Imperial Stout (10.5 / 35) – Pours pitch black with a thin espresso like head, leaving a decent amount of lacing as it recedes down the glass. Nose is a wonderful yet subdued bourbon profile. The taste is simply sublime. The bourbon is present, yet subtle and subdued. It's nice to so a bourbon barrel aged beer that's not over powering.

top

Thirsty Dog Siberian Night Imperial Stout (10.5 / 35) – There is some milkiness and hopiness, as well as a bit of the port wine. The alcohol is incredibly well masked; it feels like the abv should be around 5% rather than 9.7. The taste is far more complex than the aroma. This beer is phenomenally well balanced, and needs to be sipped carefully to fully appreciate.

top

Thirsty Dog Wee Heavy BBL Aged Strong Ale (10 / 30) – The aroma is damn inviting friends. Rich caramel and toasted bread wafts up, as does smooth, sweet bourbon. Vanilla and aged, soggy oak. A bit damp and gritty with notions of cocoa powder. Sweet and satisfying. The flavor lives up to the bar set by the great aroma. Very sweet bourbon is both prominent but never overwhelming or boozy. Toffee and fruity alcohol and yeasty esters add the depth of fig and raisin.

top

Three Floyd’s Behemoth Barley Wine (12.5 / 50) – Nice caramel malt sweetness with a touch of brown sugar as well, but despite the ample malt presence, it pales in comparison to the huge hop flavors that dominate this beer. Citrusy grapefruit is the main flavor mixed in with plenty of piny bitterness as well.

top

Three Floyd’s Dreadnaught Imperial IPA (9.5 / 99) – A hophead’s dream beer. This Imperial India Pale Ale has an opening salvo of mango, peach and citrus hop aromas that sit atop a pronounced caramel malt backbone. Although Dreadnaught is a strong and intensely hoppy ale, its complex flavor is both smooth and memorable.

top

Two Brothers Bare Tree Weisse Wine (10 / 18) – Smells like yeast, lemon, white grape and quite funky. It's like a wheat mixed with a wild.  Heavy fruit and yeast taste up front. Banana dominates the fruit profile, but there's also a bit of lemon. Lots of cloves, spices, and brett funk hit in the middle. Ends a bit woody and bitter. Very nice and complex.  Creamy, medium mouthfeel. Obscenely easy to drink

top

Victory Old Horizontal Barley Wine (11 / 35) – Heavy malt profile as expected with sweetness. Lots of caramel, some vanilla, light cherries, and earthy hops. Taste beautifully matches the aroma. Big heavy hitting caramel malt right up front. A nice sweetness that transitions into an earthy hoppiness (almost like tobacco), which lends a bit of a bitter bite. A real light fruit flavor that showcases cherries. Finishes dry and slightly bitter.
